As you’ve probably noticed, my posts have been sort of random lately. I’ve discussed going back to school and what’s going on at work and in my personal life. Life gets hectic around the holidays and I’ve sort of been using the blog to blow off some steam and get things off my chest. I’m really hoping that people don’t mind if I do that every once in a while. It may give you some insight in to where I am going with some of my future posts and some of the things I’ve gone through in life. I’m hoping that one day, a couple years down the road, I’ll look back through my archives and really see the progress that my life has made.

This blog is now about six months old. It literally feels like I’ve been doing this for just a few weeks. I wanted to take an opportunity to link to some of the posts I’ve written in the past that I feel are pretty strong posts. A lot of these, people have never read because they are getting old and buried in my archives.

With Christmas coming up, things can start to get really tight on our wallets. Over at MSN Money there is a great article called 10 Ways To Pay Cash For Christmas. It has some great ideas on how to save money or how to come up with some extra cash for those gifts. One idea that I think is particularly smart is that you can cash in your airline miles or reward points from your credit cards and use them towards gifts for the loved ones. I actually have a card that earns airline miles and I’m really considering cashing them in for some reward points. I’m not quite sure what the exchange rate is on them but it’s sure to get me something. Another thing that the list suggests is to cash in your coins. Go to a local Coinstar and trade all your change for cash. I do this pretty much once a year and usually walk away with at least a hundred bucks. The cool thing is, if you cash in your coins for an Amazon gift card, Coinstar doesn’t take their $0.08 per $1.00 cut. That’s great for Christmas because I can pretty much do all my gift shopping on Amazon.

Here’s a quick rundown of the list:
1. Adjust your income tax withholding.
2. Use your airline miles and trade them in for merchandise.
3. Use your credit card reward points for cool gifts.
4. Cash in your coins.
5. Get another job. Tons of places are hiring for seasonal positions.
6. Sell some stuff.
7. Sell other people’s stuff.
8. Cancel some subscriptions.
9. Call in your I.O.U.s.
10. Buy nothing else for a month.

Of course the article goes in to much more detail on each of these points. If you fear struggling through the holidays this year, this is a great place to start.

The Simple Dollar is probably one of my favorite personal finance websites on the internet. It is amazing how often Trent can post and consistently post absolutely great quality content. A couple days ago I was browsing around through the archives over at The Simple Dollar and I found a really cool post with a list of 30 pieces of computer software that are absolutely free. I’d never heard of most of these programs. You can basically get a replacement for almost any program you use right now but for free.

Some of the cool free software that is available is OpenOffice, which all but replaces Microsoft Office and GnuCash, which is like a MS Money or Quicken. I already use Firefox and VLC media player and highly recommend them as well. It’s a great article and an amazing site.

Over at MS Money they posted an article about some great new businesses that involve food. There are some really great ideas over there. I really love reading articles like this because it really gives me inspiration for my future businesses. It’s great to see people taking their little ideas and making them realities and making them successful. Not to mention that I really want to check out some of these in real life. The number 2 business on this list combines wine tasting with a massage. All I can say is, “why didn’t I think of that?” That sounds amazing!

According to Forbes List of Best Cities For Jobs, Salt Lake City, Utah is the best place to live for a better job. The unemployment rate is low and the rate of income growth is high. Apparently, San Diego (or nowhere in California, for that matter) made the list. Florida and Oklahoma are also apparently good places to live as well.

The list is based on five factors:

Unemployment Rate

Job Growth

Income Growth

Median Household Income

Cost of living

I also find it quite interesting that none of the country’s major cities made the list. There’s no New York, Los Angeles or Chicago…

If you are unsatisfied with your job and you just aren’t making the money that you think you deserve, maybe relocation is an option. If I wasn’t so heavily involved in my family’s business, I know I would definitely consider relocation. Salt Lake City is a beautiful place too…
