How Can Lyndon B. Johnson Effect Your Career?

Lyndon Johnson was the 36th President of the United States. He succeeded John F. Kennedy following his assassination in 1963. Johnson wasn’t the most popular president because he escalated American involvement in the Vietnam War. Johnson was known to be the most frugal of all the presidents. He was a millionaire but had the habit of squeezing every penny out of all of the people he did business with. I don’t want to give you a history lesson on L.B.J. but that’s a little bit of background on him.
The point of this post is to show you the L.B.J. had a great philosophy on communication with others. Long before his presidency, he created a list of 10 points to gain respect and admiration from the people that he came in contact with.
Here is the list that he created:
- Learn to remember names. Inefficiency at this point may indicate that your interest is not sufficiently outgoing.
- Be a comfortable person so there is no strain in being with you. Be an old-shoe kind of individual.
- Acquire the quality of relaxed-easy going so that things do not ruffle you.
- Don’t be egotistical. Guard against the impression that you know it all.
- Cultivate the quality of being interesting so people will get something of value from their association with you.
- Study to get the “scratchy” elements out of your personality, even those of which you may be unconscious.
- Sincerely attempt to heal, on an honest basis, every misunderstanding you have had or now have. Drain off your grievances.
- Practice liking people until you learn to do so genuinely.
- Never miss an opportunity to say a word of congratulation upon anyone’s achievement, or express sympathy in sorrow or disappointment.
- Give spiritual strength to people, and they will give genuine affection to you.
That is a direct quote of the list. Now I’m going to break it down and look at every point on his list individually.
1. Learn to remember names. Inefficiency at this point may indicate that your interest is not sufficiently outgoing.
This point sort of goes along with my post about making people feel important. Little things like remembering people’s names can go a long way. Most people are not very good with names when they only first meet someone. Remembering someone’s name after meeting them and only hearing it once can really show that you valued meeting that person. It is a great thing to get in the habit of doing.
2. Be a comfortable person so there is no strain in being with you. Be an old-shoe kind of individual.
Make an attempt to be that person. You know, the one that everyone says, “the first time I met him/her, I felt like I’ve just known him/her forever.” You want to gain that reputation because that’s who people want to hire, that’s the person that has connections in all sorts of industries. This is a great trait to acquire.
3. Acquire the quality of relaxed-easy going so that things do not ruffle you.
Relieve stress in your life. Let things roll off you. It will make you a much happier person and make you a much better person to be around.
4. Don’t be egotistical. Guard against the impression that you know it all.
No one likes an ego maniac. You want to appear down to Earth to everyone. If you constantly talk to people like you know everything, you will lose a lot of respect. Be gracious and humble and people will enjoy being around you.
5. Cultivate the quality of being interesting so people will get something of value from their association with you.
This point really makes sense as well. You want people to walk away from a conversation with you feeling like they really gained something from that. Make people feel like, just by knowing you, they have gained a valuable contact.
6. Study to get the “scratchy” elements out of your personality, even those of which you may be unconscious.
Break the bad habits. Do your best to find the character traits that are less than desirable and eliminate them. Work a little bit harder to be a better person to be around.
7. Sincerely attempt to heal, on an honest basis, every misunderstanding you have had or now have. Drain off your grievances.
Don’t hold grudges with anyone. They are pointless and, most likely, meaningless. Really evaluate why you and this other person have this misunderstanding. Upon further evaluation, you’ll probably learn that these little quarrels are, in actuality, just simple misunderstandings. Grudges should hold no place in your life.
8. Practice liking people until you learn to do so genuinely.
This is a great habit to have. If you genuinely liked everyone that you came in contact with, how great would life be? You would have so many friends and so many great contacts. It’s been proven that people like people who like them. Like everyone and everyone will like you. It seems so simple…
9. Never miss an opportunity to say a word of congratulation upon anyone’s achievement, or express sympathy in sorrow or disappointment.
This shows people that you honestly care about what they are going through in their life right now. Show people you care and they will treat you the same.
10. Give spiritual strength to people, and they will give genuine affection to you.
Be a motivator. Make people feel like they can do anything. If you are the person that gives them words of strength, they will come to you for encouragement and affection.
Follow these steps towards being a better communicator and it can take you far in your career and in life. That’s how you can let the words L.B.J. effect your career.

Wildly Successful With Little To No Education?

I, in no way, condone dropping out of school. I do believe that school is necessary to make it far in your career. I recently found this article, however, that lists 15 Successful Entrepreneurs that didn’t graduate from college. Heck, the creater of Hershey’s didn’t even graduate from elementary school.
I love reading stories like this of entrepreneurs that have been successful and I will probably constantly point you in the direction of great articles that are both motivational and inspirational. Give this a read because stuff like this really gets those creative juices flowing.
(By the way. That’s a picture of Steve Jobs back in the day. Yea… You remember. The Oregon Trail days…)
October – Month in Review

I set a whole bunch of goals for myself to achieve in the month of October. Unfortunately, I pretty much didn’t hit any of them. I don’t want to make excuses but there was a fire that consumed about a week of my life which made it hard.
Here were my goals for October:
- Post 5 Blog Posts Per Week
I missed two days total due to the fire. I didn’t post on a Tuesday and a Thursday. Other that that, I came really close. I’m going to stick with this routine though. In my effort to post less but provide more quality content, I actually increased my visitors per day and my subscriber numbers. - Exchange 5 More Blogroll Links
I think I managed to land on two more blogrolls throughout the entire month. Unfortunately, I just didn’t make it one of my main focuses. I’m starting to realize that being on someone’s blogroll isn’t making a whole lot of difference. A lot of blogrolls are tucked off on some other page, other than the main page and they just don’t really help draw traffic. The real traffic comes from other blogs posting about one of your posts or about your site. Now that generates some traffic. - Get to 100 subscribers
I’m currently sitting at 60 subscribers. I sort of hit a ceiling for the month. Pretty much all month long I sat at 54 subscribers and no matter what I did, I just could not break that through that number. A couple days ago, I moved my subscribe button up to the top of the page and added the option to subscribe through e-mail and managed to generate 6 more subscribers from that move alone. I’ve broken through the ceiling, let’s see where we can go from here. - Continue to participate in 1 carnival per week
Carnivals have been great to this blog. I believe that the majority of this site’s traffic comes from carnivals. I participated in a carnival every week this month with the exception of the week of the fire. I just couldn’t manage to get some niche related posts up that were worthy of a carnival. - Make Some Money
I set my goal at making $50 last month. I believe we made about $30 for the entire month. The upside to this is that for the two months previous to this month, we failed to make one cent. So at least we are moving up. I see a goal of $50 for November being absolutely no problem based on the rate that we earned for October.
My Goals For November:
- Post 5 blog posts per week
So far, this has worked out great for me. Why fix it if it isn’t broken? I am starting to realize that people don’t tend to read blogs much on weekends and I have a hard time creating real quality content if I am trying to come up with something 7 days a week. Besides, weekends are insanely hectic for me. I have a hard enough time finding any time to relax on my weekends, let alone write quality blog content. - Get to 100 subscribers
I’m going to stick with this number for the month. I’m barely over my September goal by the end of the month of October. I think 100 should be easy for the month of November. Once I meet this goal, I’ll start shooting for numbers that seem farther out of reach. - At least 1 carnival per week
Carnivals are really boosting this blog. I’ve got to stick with them. - Break $100 total money made
Last month I wanted to break $50 for the month. This month I want to make $100 total. That means I’ve got to make $70 over the course of this month. I think that’s obtainable. Some of the sponsors that I haven’t seen much from in the past are starting to kick in and I think we’re finally going to have a month where we see a lot of growth. - At least 2 guest posts on other (more popular) blogs
Something that really seems to help blogs out is when they guest post on other blogger’s sites. I want to get in to this more to really help promote this blog. I am hoping to get at least two guest posts in on some other popular blogs. Every time I write a post that I feel is a really quality post, I want it for my site. I’ve got to learn to use some of those posts on other sites. It can prove to be much more beneficial in the future. - New theme / layout
I’m smack dap in the middle of creating a brand new theme for this site. I’m creating it myself and, I’m hoping, it will be much less cluttered and be more user friendly as far as attracting subscribers and highlighting popular posts. Look for that to go live sometime this month.

It’s a real motivator to realize that if I don’t make my goals happen, I’ll have to answer to all my readers.

Make People Feel Important
This is another tip that I really feel can help make a person successful. You’ve got to make other people feel important. Every person on the planet wants to feel important. Have a philosophy in life that everyone that you come in contact with is important. It can go a very long way. If you are in business and you make every customer feel like they are your most important client, you are almost guaranteed to have a repeat customer. If you walked in to a store and the store’s clerks didn’t give you the time of day, would you feel comfortable returning? Of course not, you want to go somewhere that you felt your business is wanted.
This concept does not just apply to business. An excellent book, called The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, told a little story that describes my point perfectly. He told a story of a bus driver that wasn’t really the nicest guy. He would constantly pull away from the bus stops with people running towards the bus who were a little late. He, for the most part, had no mercy. If you were late to the bus stop, you missed the bus. There was one man, however, who would always sit up in the front seat of the bus and talk to the driver. He would talk about how hard the bus driver’s job must be and how he really respected the work that he did. He really talked up the bus driver’s job and really made him feel important. Because of this, the man never missed the bus, even if he was running late. He was the one man who made the bus driver feel important and in return, the bus driver always made sure he made the bus.
In the business world, the best sales representatives are the ones that can make their clients feel important. I’m in the shutter industry. In this industry, I get people selling me lumber, paint, hinges and various other components. Some people are surprised to learn that I don’t always go with the cheapest components. It means a lot to me to purchase from the people I most like dealing with. If a company tries to make me think that we need them, I’m almost instantly turned off. When a company makes me feel like I’m their most important client and they will do anything they can to keep me, they’ve usually got me locked in.
Another very intriguing statement from The Magic of Thinking Big is that of all the creatures on this entire planet, only about one in ten million is a human being. I think that makes all humans pretty important in the grand scheme of things.

Something to Aim For
My grandpa and I exchange jokes and random things through e-mail all the time. The other day he sent me this:

I thought it was funny but it also made me think of it’s relevance. It’s like a small-scale, set-a-goal, motivational picture. With everything in life that you want to succeed in, you’ve got to set a goal, aim for it, and if you stay the course, you’ll achieve your goal. Now my dad and I have a running joke over at our company… When talking about employees and the tasks at hand, we tell each other that we need to give them a fly to aim for.
